A large waist measurement can be a killer. If you have a waist size of over 40 inches, it is high time you do something to reduce it. Pot bellied people face greater risks of diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, abnormal lipids, insulin resistance, and certain types of cancer.
The human body naturally stores fat for a lean period. However, the prosperity of the modern world ensures that there is no lean period. As a result of this, the accumulated, unused fat in you body releases fat molecules into the blood at an alarming rate. This affects the normal metabolism of the body and leads to insulin loss. Fat also secretes substances, such as cortisol, leptin, and cytokines that increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
What causes a pot belly? The most common reason is a sedentary life style coupled with wrong eating habits. Age is another causative factor. Men tend to put on weight as they grow older. Most men notice that their waistline has extended a few inches when they touch their thirties. Genes have nothing much to do with it, although some men do put on weight because of hereditary factors.
Many researchers have observed a distinct relationship between beer and the belly, although they are still not able to explain how beer causes a ‘beer belly.’ However, beer is not the only culprit; any alcoholic beverage can add fat. Alcohol is high in calories and stimulates appetite.
Stress is yet another fat forming factor. Stress releases copious amounts of stress hormone, called cortisol. High stress and high cortisol levels lead to large deposits of fat in the abdomen because it contains more cortisol receptors. People, who are trapped in stressful conditions, such as unhappy marriage or a job they hate, tend to develop an apple-shaped figure with an ample middle.
Your weight depends on your calorie intake. The more calories you take in, the more is your weight. When you cannot burn the excess calories you take, they accumulate as fat, which tends to pack itself in the abdominal region in case of men, and in the hips and thighs in case of women. The greatest favor you can do yourself is to get rid of it and avoid the risk of heart disease, blood pressure, and diabetes.
Armed with an active lifestyle and a good diet program, you can easily kick belly fat. The good news is that belly fat is the first to go, and it is easier for men to lose belly fat than it is for women to lose thigh fat. Follow the simple, time-tested, and proven formula that has helped millions of people to lose weight: reduce your calorie intake and burn the extra calories with physical activity.

Research has shown that weight training coupled with aerobics is the best combination to lose excess weight. Most men need to walk 10,000 steps a day and maintain good eating habits in order to stay healthy. If you have an ample middle, you need to walk more. Bicycling, swimming, and strenuous yard work is the best workout for you. Sit-ups might strengthen your abdominal muscles, but will not reduce fat.
Battling weight is an on going process. Although it is tougher to get back to your ideal weight for the first time, it is not that difficult to maintain that weight. In any case, you must continue to watch your food habits and maintain an active lifestyle.
